Document Summary

How do we relate to and think about disasters. How do we make sense of them. Endless as there will always be another. Inherent aspect of how we develop the world because it is an essential aspect for the way we progress. Accidents, war, we do not move smoothly into the future. We stumble without ever really knowing where we will end up (cid:498)to invent the sailing ship or steamer is to invent the shipwreck. To invent the train is to invent the rail accident of derailment. To invent the family automobile is to produce the pile- up on the highway. To get what is heavier than air to take off in the form of an aeroplane or dirigible is to invent the crash, the air disaster. Catastrophes inevitable because technical development proceeds by way of accidents and accidental discoveries. Future for us is about power, loss, but always in hope of gaining more power and losing nothing.
