Document Summary

Describe a population on basis of incomplete data. Motive of doing a sample is description. Hopes its adequate to represent the population: definitions. Population (universe): basis of the research question. Sampling frame: list of (hopefully) all members of the populations, unlikely to achieve this, sample will eventually be drawn from this lost, as close a proxy to the universe as possible. Census: whole population is canvased, different than sample, larger portion tested. Non-probability sample: probability of selecting any given member of population is unknown. Likelihood of selecting a particular entity of the sample is random. Includes convenience sample (quickly, easily, cost effective), & volunteer sample (such as an internet sample) Informative, however bears very little statistical validity. No calculation of the standard error, thus no way to estimate the reliability, or to know how representative the sample is of the population. Probable sample: sample in which likelihood of any given element being selected for the sample is known.
