To be related empirically means they move together in some way. One measure whereby we can summarize how variables move together is called correlation coefficient. Ex: hours of study (independent/exogenous) and grades (dependent, y-axis - vertical) Hours and grades are related, formula exists, max value of 1. Presume we can neutralize the control (in this case, iq) would give a straight line on the scatter diagram (r=1)
