Lying about the Interview
1. Sons & Fathers
Being the son of a survivor in the western world is not that unusual
Tells the truth about anything his father ever experienced
When Vladak throws away his sons coat
“I have for you an older one, warmer one”
Vladak is still trying to survive
Scene which catches a lot of reviewers: shows how mean the son is to the
father
Scene which shows that he is later ashamed, which is why he includes it
Vladark absorbs Artie’s anger, never actually gets very mad
Vladark always talks about his experience, never turns Artie down
Only scene where Vladak and Anya are genuinely fighting is the diary
scene
Like a crime to burn the info, Vladak gets really pissed off
The very last line: “murderer”
Worst line because hes being honest with how badly he treated his father
2. The curse of survival
Survivor’s guilt is the pressure/wrongness for having survived at all
Why did you survive?
Cannot survive the guilt that is put on you
Put car situation and relate it to holocaust
Surviving the death camps, you are left with a death imprint
Can leave a paralyzing depression
Why did you get to survive and not someone else?
Vladark trained himself to do anything
Can never complain in a household with a survivor
Survivors are dying off
Never knows when hes going to need to survive (becomes a shoe maker,
always saves things etc)
Doesn’t know when hes gonna have to buy his life back
What happens when the only time you feel alive/ feel like you can survive
is when you are putting yourself in the past and telling the story?
3. Telling or being silent
Silence is supposed to be nothingness but its really not, it always has
another meaning
Complex topic
Issue of sounds and speech
4. Telling the “truth?”
Who’s truth is the real truth?
How do you know you’re being told the truth?
For vladak there was only one truth
Pg 134
Photo fake, its like a selfie
Its like in a souvenier photo shop, not like in the camps
Whats true about it?
He looks super healthy and stuff that’s not true
5. Prisoners of the Past
6. Becoming others
Takeaway
1. MAUS MAKES EMOTIONAL TRUTH CLAIMS ABOUT HISTORY,
EMOTION DOESN’T MAKE IT FALSE OR TRUE
2. ITS EASY TO BE MADE INTO A NON HUMAN WHO HAS NO RIGHTS
3. TRAUMA CAN MAKE YOU A PRISONER OF THE PAST
4. JUST BECAUSE ITS PRINTED, ON FILM, ON THE WEB OR ON TV
(ESPECIALLY TV NEWS) DOESN’T MEAN ITS TRUE
