The altered
Reading the World
1. Watch the signified
2. Private signs
3. Public signs
4. Reading the world
Video of police at murder scene
Ex. Fuck (shame, missed, surprise, something, thinking, “ow”, satisfaction)
-When you repeat a word consistently, it loses its meaning because it can mean multiple
things
-Signifier: Fuck
Private signs
-The codes we have in public for everything (im sorry, ow, thanks)
-Not necessarily made of words
-Moved to images, sounds being communication too
-When it’s a small crowd, everybody knows the codes and the context of the signs
-When family knows you well, they notice difference in voice, body language, how yes
means no, no means yes, because of the way you turn your head, way you speak (non
verbal signifiers)
-When you’re in private, it is very hard code to crack
Private signs
Ex. Video of people being inlove
-Read the signs of the guy pausing when saying the name and how the girl didn’t say
anything when she got the drink
-The girlfriend was the one “looking from the outside in”
-Impossible to break, very fast
Public signs
-Need to know the context and where it appeared (was it during a war, during a time of
cultural stress, during a time of celebration?)
-Race, class and gender (how are these 3 involved in the product/sign?)
Ex. Video of girl dancing for Heineken
-Women should change the medium and take control but many woman that have an
influence on the world go with the expectations given to woman everywhere
-Example of this is love story
