Smaller shows on broadway and off-broadway: often written by younger people to give them a chance to get known and test their abilities (ex. Tom jones, harvey schmidt started doing smaller shows before making their huge shows) Simple story-telling with small casts and often simple production needs: really depending on the little things, nothing elaborate, all about the story and the singing. A reaction to the huge shows on broadway in 1950s and 60s: refreshing to see something smaller. I do, i do (1966, tom jones and harvey schmidt) story about a marriage. I love my wife (1977, cy coleman and michael stewart: romance/romance (1987, keith herman and barry harrmann, all 4 are all personal love stories, and don"t need a massive cast. More recent mini musicals: popular cult hits like bat-boy: the musical, toxic avenger, and evil.
