Communication is always influenced by the environment in which it takes place: Physical setting: time and space. Psychological, social, and cultural charact. Nurses: need to be aware of their own expressions. Impossible to control all facial expression, but nurse must learn to control expressions of fear or disgust. Significance: may reveal vital information. Assessing clients use of nonverbal cues to communicate emotions helps you communicate better. Can convey financial status, culture, religion, groups: how one dresses often indicates how one feels. Erect posture and active purposeful stride well- being. Slouched posture and a slow, shuffling gait depression or physical discomfort. Tense posture, rapid, determined gait anxiety/anger. Nurse always needs to clarify meaning.
