Visiting a family in a home setting requires nurses to engage in an environment where they play a dual role of both professional and guest. Below are a few tips to help ease you through your first home visit. Home visits shouldn"t be longer than one hour and you must document within 48 hours. Consider safety do not leave your purse/belongings open in your car. Try to be right on time (10 minutes early feels like 30 minutes to a new mother). Introduce yourselves - name, fanshawe college, second year nursing students. Ask whether or not they would like you to take your shoes off and ask them where they would like you to sit. Overview of home visits - what you plan to do: example one of our goals is to learn about what health means to families and to learn about families (their strengths and challenges).
