Imagine you have been sick and at on your back in bed all weekend. Being bedridden is one of most common phenomena in nursing. Why some people become bedridden is not linked to a diagnosis or pathology. Bed rest was invented as a form of treatment in the 19th century. Are they on bed rest or are they bedridden. Bedridden should not be seen as a fate - rather a complication. High morbidity/mortality in hip fractures in older women. Belief that bed rest is restful and healing e. g. for the elderly. Key is that of the carer - whether they think they can correct it or not. Like having visitors, don"t have news to share due to being in a room. Cardiac workload - heart works harder when supine (when rest is extended) Slows blood return, and with release of breath. Surge of blood is delivered to the heart.
