Pathology 2420A Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Intercalated Disc, Heart, Hyperthyroidism
Document Summary
Resulting from injury to the endothelial lining of the artery. Module 7 atherosclerosis & ihd. Of all deaths in western world. Begins early in life, silent until it has progressed to disease. Earliest pathological lesion is called a fatty streak. Some slowly progress into mature atherosclerotic lesion, the fibro- fatty plaque. Plaque development as a chronic inflammatory response. Risk factors cause epithelial damage/dysfunction. Big 3 smoking, hypertension and increased cholesterol: all potentially modifiable (prevent or treat). Risk is multiplied, when 2 or 3 factors present: diabetes also risk factor, modifiable. Non modifiable age, gender (premenopausal women are at lower risk, but catch up to men after menopause), family history, ethnicity. Other potentially modifiable obesity, low ses, type level. Protective factors (reduced risk) moderate alcohol consumption. Mahor sites of ather. In more then 1 organ system. The heart blood supply via coronary arteries which comes from aprta just beyond aortic valve. These are medium sized artieries and therefore, sucesptible to ather.
