Pathology 3240A Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Coeliac Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Theophylline
Document Summary
Derived from the greek pathos meaning disease" or suffering" and logia meaning "study" it is literally the study of suffering and illness. Pathology is the study of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs of the body that cause or are caused by disease. Gross examination (macroscopic) - you can see it with the naked eye. Immunohistochemistry (identify antigens in cells) - looks at a cell. Immunofluorescence (also identifies antigens but it fluoresces) Electron microscopy - looks at parts of cells. All diseases result from some disturbance to cells as a result of physical or environmental insults (acquired) and/or as a result of a genetic aberration (inherited or acquired). Most broadly, disease may be defined as the pattern of response of living organisms to injury. When cells fail to adapt to the injury, or the adaptive mechanism itself becomes harmful, disease results.
