Document Summary

This lesson is not meant to be an exhaustive discussion of the endocrine system and all of the disorders of endocrine glands. Rather it is intended to present a general understanding and overview of the endocrine system and the control of hormone production and release in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and target organ. Disorders of the pituitary, primarily pituitary adenomas are presented, as well as disorders of the adrenal cortex as an example of altered control mechanisms at these three levels. For those wishing to read further please see the text book chapter on endocrine systems. At the end of this lesson the student should be able to: Describe the endocrine system in its broadest sense. Know the difference between exocrine, endocrine, paracrine, and autocrine systems and be able to give examples of each. Draw a schematic diagram to show the relationships between the tertiary, secondary, and primary levels of endocrine organs (i. e. hypothalamus, pituitary, & target organs).
