Pharmacology 2060A/B Lecture 2: Lecture 2
Document Summary
Study of drug movement in the body. Four basic processes: adme (what the body does to the drug, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion. Is defined as the study of drug movement in the body. Is what the body does to the drug: pharmacokinetics is composed of four basic processes: Over time dissolution occurs and the drug molecules are dissolved in the liquid. Movement from site administered into the blood. A drug that is highly lipophilic can cross over cell membrane from intestine into the blood and is therefore more rapidly absorbed than the hydrophilic drug that cannot cross membrane: ph partitioning. Uptake brings drug inside cells - facilitate absorption. Efflux pump outside decrease absorption. Look at intestine: the uptake transport brings hydrophilic drug form outside to inside, efflux pumps drug outside. Intestine vs. stomach: oral administration, most common method of drug administration, advantages, safety, convenience, economical, disadvantages. It involves the disintegration of the tablet and the dissolution of the drug.
