Document Summary

Definitions: seizure - a sudden alteration of behaviour that is caused by cns dysfunction. Epileptic seizure - a seizure that is caused by primary cns dysfunction. This is due to excess depolarization (excess firing of action potential due to depolarization) and hypersynchronization of neurons. Non-epileptic seizure - a seizure-like episode that is not the result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy - a tendency for recurrent spontaneous epileptic seizures. Status epilepticus - a single unremitting epileptic seizure of duration longer than 30 minutes or frequent seizures without recovery of awareness in between. Arise in a specific area of the brain. The seizure activity has a focal point in an area of the brain. 2 different types: simple partial, the patient does not loss consciousness, the symptom will depend on where the focus of the seizure is or where you can localize the disorganized activity from. Different than focal because they have a bilateral and diffuse onset.
