Document Summary

Lipoproteins = spherical macromolecular complexes of lipids & specific proteins called apolipoproteins: examples of apolipoproteins: apob100/c/e (dependent on the type of lipid, transport hydrophobic neutral lipids (cholesterol esters & triglycerides) throughout the body. Lipoproteins are categorized based on density, which is dictated by their lipid composition. Each class of lipoprotein also has a distinct complement of apolipoproteins: chylomicrons (cm) are the largest & preset after a meal (created in the intestines) Contain mainly triglycerides: apob48, vldls are the next largest. Metabolic product of vldl as the triglycerides in vldls get hydrolyzed, the cholesterol esters are left in the core and become a ldl. In between meals, the liver will assemble and secrete vldls. When the high density lipoprotein becomes large enough, it is taken up again by the liver. Ldl receptor-mediated endocytosis of ldl particles results in increased intracellular free cholesterol concentration. Specifically, the following enzymes undergo changes to their activity:
