Friedrich nietzsche, two excerpts from twilight of the idols (hackett 1997). Often associated with nazism and other dark things. Middle class childhood suffered from neurological disorders throughout his life: death of his father and brother played a vital role in his life. Indirect knowledge: opinions, newspapers: direct: learning from the empirical world (senses) Intelligible realm: mathematical truths; things you have to abstractly contemplate to get to: forms: highest form of reality because the world is always changing, definitions like justice are always altering, role of the forms is always perfect. Therefore g is becoming a decadent society. S"s diagnosis was wrong: n thinks that all philosophy has tried to escape decadence, but all they"ve done in reality is rewrite it, n thinks that s wanted to die, he essentially killed himself. Important b/c this theme is all over n"s work: he"s thanking the god of medicine for the gift of death, nihilism, christianity, art, etc.
