A good way to start to answer this is historically. In the old days philosophy stood more or less for inquiry . Aristotle, for example, wrote about not only ethics and metaphysics but also biology, literary theory, political science and much more. Over time, many of these areas get carved of as disciplines of their own. Among other things, questions that, in the end at least, can"t be answered empirically. 2 general contrasts: two sorts of starting points, an idea or concept, a shared feature of the world or our experience of it, two places to start: In medias res a: afresh, two orders in which to proceed (pertains to questions of metaphysics and epistemology, metaphysics first, epistemology first. Rosen"s claim: anchored as the argument is in our use of arithmetic, the burden lies on the critic. Rosen says: she must say more she must give us reason to think that knowledge of abstract objects is suspect.
