Despite the common blanket term feminist there exists many different varieties of feminism (and thus feminists) Feminist theories provide us with the tools to think through complex issues, ask particular questions, develop strategies for social change, and critically analyze where we"ve been and where we might be going . Recall bartky"s discussion of power as it relates to the panopticon: Result is to induce in the inmate a state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power . The inmate engages in self surveillance: inmate becomes his own jailer, modifying his behavior as though he is always being watched. Inmate"s body is a docile body: body that takes on the job of regulating itself. Where is the account of the disciplinary practices that engender the docile bodies" of women, bodies more docile than the bodies of men?
