Leture 1:
Leiiz ad the Prole of Evil
UWO Philosophy 1020 Term 2 Lecture 1
Leibniz will argue that the existence of evil is compatible, with the existence of God. Evil is also
necessary, Leibniz argues, for this to be the best possible world.
Objection One to Theodicy:
1. Whoever does not choose the best is lacking in power, or in goodness, or in knowledge
2. God, because evil exists, did not choose to create the best world
3. Therefore, god has been lacking in power, or in goodness, or in knowledge
Leibniz Denies p.2 by refuting p.1:
1. Whoever makes things in which there is evil, which could have been made without any
evil, or the making of which could have been omitted/avoided, does not choose the best
(Leibniz is explaining p.1)
2. God has made a world in hih there as eil ad he eed’t hae
3. Therefore, god has not chosen the best
The Problem with p.1:
The est pla is ot alays that hih seeks to aoid eil, sie it ay happe that the
eil e aopaied y a greater good.
The price for the capaity for irtue is the apaity for ie…
Leibniz, Monadology:
(31) Our reasonings are grounded upon two great principles, that of contradiction, in
virtue of which we judge false that which involves a contradiction, and true that which is
opposed or contradictory to the false.
So something cannot be both a and not a, otherwise it is a contradiction.
(32) And that of sufficient reason, in virtue of which we hold that there can be no fact
real or existing, no statement true, unless there be a sufficient reason, why it should be
so and not otherwise, although these reasons usually cannot be known by us.
So if a tree falls over there must have been some reason sufficient enough to account
for it falling.
