Philosophy 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Coherence Theory
Document Summary
Whether they are true or false doesn"t depend on any quality of the belief, but on the relation of the belief to something else. We are searching for an account of truth it can define the word or it can tell us what the criteria by which we can determine whether something is true or false. Whatever makes the belief true or false is something external to that belief, it does not exist internally. All this, in particular the third, leads us, according to russell, to adopt the view that truth consists in some form of correspondence between belief and fact. Belief and fact: to say that a belief is true i to say it in some way corresponds to the facts. Austin accepts the idea that truth is a matter of correspondence, but takes issues with two parts of russell"s formulation (and clarifies a third).
