Lying is bad, the truth is good - but yet we still lie. Bad motives, you feel dumb, not respectful. The liar intends to statement to deceive or mislead. The liar believes what he/she is saying is not true. It is possible to intend to lie and fail. You think something is wrong but it turns out to be true. You can intend to lie and fail because people find out or know you are a liar. Causes harm to people who are lied to. Causes harm to liar (loss of trust, punishment) Causes harm to society - protect against possibility of lying. Should i ask whether the practice of lying will maximize positive. Deontologists think consequentialists are morally suspect (weasels) They only tell the truth when they think doing so will maximize positive consequences. I cannot tell a lie, it was i - it is just the right thing to do.
