Kantian Business Ethics - Heather Salazar
• The Kantian answer/approach is that your only motivation should not be just self-interested
and you should making sure that you're aiding people in making rational decisions
o So if you're advertising something potentially dangerous, you have to make the
information available
• But you have to do this because you want to, not because you're afraid
• So according to Kantian principles, you're allowed to sell harmful products as long as long as
you are not harming other people - otherwise it's still about self-interest and profit
• Kantian ethics is all about acting with respect towards all autonomous beings
o We all have duties towards one another - duties depend on the relationship
• Kantian ethics constrains our actions - rules to act by
• "the only thing that is intrinsically good, or good-in-itself, is the good will.
o Good will is the only thing truly under our control
• The only thing that's truly under out control is our motivation that we act on
