Document Summary

The motions of the planets follow spheres, rotating in the celestial realm. Aristotle"s answer: the celestial bodies move in circles, which can be explained by the rotation of spheres. Agrees with plato that the earth moves in a circular motion. In order to account for all of the celestial movements (movement of stars, planets, moon, sun etc. ), aristotle posits the existence of 55 spheres corresponding to each of the observed movements: each sphere & comet have their own sphere to the motion. Aristotle the 1st to make the distinction btwn form & matter. If there was more than 1 heaven would be many moving principles. All things that are many in # have matter. The primary essence" is fulfillment"- of purpose, or telos. Things that have matter, on the other hand, is for the sake of something else (the sake for the outer motion) (think of the creator"s purpose in the timaeus)
