Philosophy 1230A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Relativism, Pyrrho, Foundationalism
Document Summary
Relativism: can stand in the way of critical thinking. Only have to believe something for it to be true. Tax knowledge: it is impossible to know the truth about reality. Worth making distinctions about different types of skeptics. All skeptical arguments (regarding knowledge) have the same basic underlying structure. Knowledge has certain requirements, certain conditions must be satisfied. One of the necessary conditions has not been satisfied. Plato"s view of knowledge: must be justified true belief. Local skeptical arguments: these conclude that nobody does know anything in some particular domain. Global skeptic: conclude nobody can know anything in any domain. Pyronian skepticism: if you get rid of your beliefs, you will be more relaxed. Things appear to be some way, so we base our actions of appearance. All propositional knowledge that p requires good reasons. Reasons for believing p are good only if i have adequate evidence that justifies.
