Men are in a kind of prison, and one must not free oneself or run away. God is our guardian and that men are are one of their possesions. Killing yourself without a sign from god is bad says socretes. That god is our protector and we are his possessions. Foolish men may think he needs to escape from their masters. The wise resent dying but the foolish would rejoice. To practice for philosophy is practicing for death. Death is the separation of the soul from the body. The body is an obstacle when it comes to truths. We began with an attempt to understand philosophy as a process by which we make arguments as a means of gathering knowledge and/or convincing others to accept our position. The necessary first step of such an enterprise is to identify a topic worthy of inquiry and, in particular, ensure that the terms we are using in that discussion are clear.
