Lying is intentionally asserting or upholding the truth of a statement that you know not to be the whole truth, where the motivation is to mislead, misinform, or coerce. There are many different types of lies, but we will be concerned mainly in our readings with four broad categories: deceit, fabrication and lying by omission, and puffery. (again, we will give some tentative definitions only. ) Deception is when someone, knows that a statement is false, but asserts it to be true. This is lying in the most common sense: e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple: o(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e tell (cid:455)ou it"s rai(cid:374)i(cid:374)g outside (cid:449)he(cid:374) (cid:455)ou (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t see the (cid:449)i(cid:374)do(cid:449) Fabrication is when you do not know if a statement is true or not, but you present it as true: example: there is something in hilary clintons deleted emails.
