DO BUSINESS ETHICS MAKE ECONOMIC SENSE? i) META-ETHICS -nature of ought, morality object or not, done with b/c no room if scientific idea of ought ii) NORMATIVE ETHICS -ie deontology/Kantian, consequences-- what makes acts right/wrong iii)APPLIED ETHICS -theory from normative applied to behaviour -1970's- boom of applied (in biz and medical, 2 biggest areas of applied)- Singer wrote on obligations in ethicas to help dying -p 17 premises: i)biz ethicists disagree over 1st principle (over the right theory of normative) ii)if theorists in a field disagree over 1st principle, then there can be no determinate answers iii) if determinate answers cannot be reached in a field, then that field has no value -- Therefore, business ethics is w/out value -conclusion wrong b.c premise 3 wrong -if there's bad in the world, can't be relativists (anything goes, personal ethics- if bad in the world, have to do something about it) PERCEIVED HISTORY -classical philosphers and economists all agreed ethics applies to all aspects of biz and econ -Adam Smith ruined it all- thinks we're fundamentally selfish- ethics not valuable b/c ethics concerned w/ others- social rel'ships, treatment of others, etc -if we're even minimally benelovent, then this is not true ARISTOTLE -says all driven to seek happiness, but many seek in wrong places -need to know ultimate good- not good for own's sake (not like $)- not intrinsically valuable,ie if just $w/ no ppl on island -educated differ from uneducated like living from dead- uneducated asleep, don't question ultimate good PLATO -Socrates defends himself aganist view that acting just is bad for us -says origin of city refutes this: -get together, need diff things, work together, etc SMITH -makes economics into a science -invisible hand- sel
