Document Summary

Socrates" argument is that you can"t distinguish between good or bad pleasures: If someone gets pleasure through the pain of others, a hedonist would say that she is still living a good life. Socrates says that one should focus on a dignified life. Plato says that we should not focus on pleasure in life. There is a distinction to be made between good and bad rhetoric. A good orator would be aimed at the gratification of the citizen, but a bad orator would be aiming at their own individual pleasures. A good ship builder doesn"t put her materials together randomly, but puts them in order. The good of each thing relies in the proper organization of its parts. A good soul is one who"s parts are properly ordered. 504d: these are the virtues of justice, self-discipline, and lawfulness are the parts of a good soul. Plato would say yes to this of course, his opponents would say otherwise.
