13. The Correspondence Theory of Truth (October 25, 2011) 0. Historical and Biographical Matters.  Bertrand Russell 1. Our question: not what is true? but: in what does truth consist? 2. The simple answer: correspondence. But correspondence between what and what?  For the belief to be true is for it to correspond to reality.  My beliefs is true if it corresponds to the state of thing in the outside world  Russell thinks this though: my mind- idea of monkey- idea of carpet- idea of spatial relationship between monkey and carpet  Outside world- real monkey – real carpet- real relationship  But..  “my belief is true if the belief is true  My belief is a private internal thing, belonging to e  But that private thing only if a public thing- the belief is true 3. Propositions  The 5 different sentences all express on and the same proposition  Utlimatley it is the proposition that is true or false  The belief= the proposition and notice a proposition is not a thing
