Bertrand russell: our question: not what is true? but: in what does truth consist, the simple answer: correspondence. For the belief to be true is for it to correspond to reality. My beliefs is true if it corresponds to the state of thing in the outside world. Russell thinks this though: my mind- idea of monkey- idea of carpet- idea of spatial relationship between monkey and carpet. Outside world- real monkey real carpet- real relationship. My belief is true if the belief is true. My belief is a private internal thing, belonging to e. But that private thing only if a public thing- the belief is true: propositions. The 5 different sentences all express on and the same proposition. Utlimatley it is the proposition that is true or false.
