Individual & private affair: belief, faith in the improvable, supernatural, god(s, awe - holy terror, essential to life: answer to nihility (the answer to human existence, eschatology: afterlife, ritual, priests/shamans, moral law. None of these features are present in every religion. There is no necessary condition, there are no necessary and sufficient conditions. Some of our concepts lack crisp boundaries, they are sometimes called: cluster concepts. Religion has long history, it has meant different things at different times in different places: evolution of religion.
