Document Summary

Renal: regulation of extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure, regulation of osmolarity, maintain ion balance, maintenance of body ph, excretion of waste, production of hormones, gluconeogenesis. There are two kidneys located posteriorly to the abdomen. The blood enters and exits the kidney on the inner concave side, through the renal artery and renal vein. The removal of the urine produced by the kidneys exits via the ureter. The major calyces are large funnel-shaped structures that collect the processed fluid from the minor calyces, which fit over pyramid shaped segments of the filtering units of the kidneys. Located in the inner portion of the kidney, the medulla. The calyces are organized radically around the renal pelvis, the innermost hollow centre of the kidney where urine collects. The cortex is the tissue that lies on top of the medulla, the outermost tissue of the kidney.
