Physiology 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Cardiovascular Disease, Genetic Disorder, Blood Sugar
Document Summary
Obesity is very prevalent but has been increasing worldwide. The worst impact is in children, earlier in life you don"t want that disease process. Bmi body mass index based on height and weight isn"t a great measurement because it doesn"t take into account muscle mass. Geneic factors because it is in our dna/lifestyle factors/environmental factors combinaion of both leads to overeaing. Hypothalamic nuclei normal healthy person keeps a healthy balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Lepin saiety signal in the brain (saiety means you feel full) Increased food increased fat cells and lepin arcuate nucleus increased energy expenditure to stop eaing. Increased energy usage decreased fat cells and lepin lateral hypothalamus paraventricular nucleus start eaing. Adipose (fat) cells release lepin, lepin is directly proporional to the amount of fat cells, acts in the hypothalamus to control feeding. Increased lepin +pomc neurons increase a-msh ***neurotransmiter. Increased a-msh paraventricular nucleus (mc4-r) increased energy expenditure.
