Physiology 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Gastrointestinal Tract, Goblet Cell, Paneth Cell
Document Summary
Portion of gastrointestinal tract where most digestion occurs. Duodenum- location where secretions of the pancreas and liver first interact with the chyme. Many enzymes that are secreted from the pancreas that are necessary for the proper chemical digestion of macromolecules if the mouth and stomach were unable to secrete their digestive enzymes, digestion would still occur normally. However, if pancreas was unable to secrete digestive, digestion would still occur fairly normally. Functions to regulate how fast or slow digestion and therefore absorption occurs. First contact between chyme and hormones from pancreas. Release hormones by affecting release of enzymes, how fast or slow. Controls how much chyme, slows if not ready and speeds if it is. Most nutrient absorption occurs here (mainly in villi) Less nutrient absorption (because less villi), but can absorb more nutrients if necessary. Has villi, projecting into small intestine to grab floating things (for absorption)
