Physiology 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone, Circadian Rhythm, Posterior Pituitary
Document Summary
Major function of nervous system is to maintain constancy of internal environment homestasis. Neurons controlling internal environment are concentrated in a region of the brain called the hypothalamus, which is greatly influence by higher control systems located in the limbic system. Functions of the hypothalamus: control of ans, neuroendocrine control, reproduction (behaviour and pituitary functions, water balance and exchange, sodium balance and exchange, body energy balance and exchange (metabolism, drives and emotions (feeding, attack, circadian rhythms, body temperature regulation. Nuclei= large collection of neurons that are grouped together for specific function. All nuclei are reciprocally collected and they talk to each other everybody knows about what"s going on in the other, good communication between everything. Hypothalamus contributes to higher order integration of autonomic, endocrine and behavioural responses for homeostatic regulation of the internal environment, for adaptation of the animal to the continuously changing external environment.
