The site in the fallopian tube where the ovulated secondary oocyte and sperm meet is called the ampulla: within the fallopian tube, smooth muscle are contracting & cilia are moving to sweep the ovum to the uterus. The ovum and the sperm undergo different gamete transport mechanisms which last for different durations as well. Sperm transport: ~20 minutes, vaginal sperm 250 million, uterine sperm 100k, ampullary sperm 50. Increased growth & activity of cilia in fallopian tubes. Increased contractions of smooth muscle: decreased viscosity of mucus. Sperm is attracted to the estrogen receptors & increase in body temperature (as a result of ovulation), which helps it move towards the ovum. Process of sperm maturation: begins in ejaculation and is completed in the female reproductive tract, alters, sperm motility hyperactivity of flagella due to increased energy production. Increased calcium activates camp increased atp production by mitochondria: motility turns from a propelling motion to a whiplash movement.
