Fallopian tubes passage for sperm and oocyte to meet: suspensory ligament suspends fallopian tube. Fimbriae finger-like projections which capture the oocyte from the ovaries to bring it into the fallopian tube: ovaries oogenesis & hormone production, uterus site of implantation where the fetus grows. Cervix entrance to uterus; where sperm can enter: vagina site of sperm deposition, site of removal of menstrual fluid, bladder & urethra. Mitosis of stem cells oogonium undergoes all of mitosis prior to birth. Halts in prophase i as primary oocyte (resumes in puberty) Meiosis i continues & finishes in primary oocyte (secondary oocyte) Creates the first polar body (all cytoplasm is pulled to 2ndary oocyte) Pauses & ovulates at metaphase ii until fertilization. Primordial follicle contains oogonia & primary oocyte (in the prophase state prior to puberty) Primary follicle (preantral follicles) develops after puberty: composed of, granulosa cells. Zona pellucida a glycoprotein directly surrounding oocytes.
