Physiology 3120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cystic Fibrosis, Mucus, Genetic Disorder
Document Summary
Cf is a genetic disorder that affects (among other organs) the lungs. Find most of the chloride outside of the cell: the cftr pumps chloride out of the cell (atp driven because against concentration gradient) Epithelial cells that line the airway have cilia that stand up. Mucus lines all of the airways: on top of the cilia is a layer of mucus, traps and collect dust particle, pollen, duct (cid:523)what you don"t want to go down to the alveoli(cid:524) in the mucus. Cilia moves the mucus back up the airway to the back of the throat, forces you to cough it up or swallow it. Smoking destroys the cilia: can not move the mucus properly. Periciliary liquid allows the cilia to move back and forth, with the layer of mucus above it. In the membrane, there are sodium channels (leak channels), chloride transporter moving chloride.
