Regnault Lecture 1
-Leydig cells make testosterone and surrounded by BV to receive nutrients
-mitosis occurs above blood-testis barrier
-once past the barrier, meiosis occurs
-warm blood from core goes into testis they want to be cool!
-counter current exchange system where incoming warm blood in arteries lose heat to outgoing
cold blood in veins
-Leydig cells make testosterone LH acts Leydig cells
-Sertoli cells make sperm FSH acts on Sertoli cells
-LH binds to its receptor which is GPCR to stimulate cAMP production which activates PKA
-PKA triggers protein production including StAR and P450
-cholesterol brought in via BV as precursor to testosterone
-testosterone is an androgen so binds to androgen receptor (AR)
-FSH binds to its receptor which is GPCR to stimulate cAMP production which activates PKA
-PKA triggers protein production including:
Cytoskeletal proteins maintain shape of Sertoli cell
ABP maintains high local testosterone conc/increase half-life
Inhibin negative feedback for FSH
-Sertoli cells make fluid in which sperm flow thus added pressure helps to move fluid along
-bulbourethral gland (Cowper’s gland) adds alkaline solution to counteract acidity of vagina
