Document Summary
All steroid hormones start from cholesterol being processed in different ways. Hypothalamus senses systemic stress like cold, hypoglycemia or fear and releases crh. Crh travels through parvicellular cells and hypophyseal portal system into anterior pituitary gland. Acth enters bloodstream to act on adrenal cortex to stimulate cortisol (steroid hormone) release. Cortisol combats stress, need more glucose for fight/flight : Increases muscle catabolism (break down of muscles for aa) Inhibit glut-4 (to increase levels of circulating glucose so that it can get to brain instead of being taken up by cells) If too much cortisol, negative feedback regulation where receptors on hypothalamus and anterior pituitary binds to cortisol to inhibit further crh/acth release. Acth binds to its receptor (which is a gpcr) to trigger 4 pathways: ac activated to increase camp production. Ceh liberates cholesterol from cholesterol esters: ldl receptor production gets upregulated to bring in more ldl.
