Have seen how skin and muscle receptors work. Now look at what happens when info reaches spinal cord spinal reflexes. Eye muscles are the only ones without spindles. All other muscles have spindles and can produce stretch reflex so biceps, triceps, quadriceps, Quadriceps muscle keeps contracting while standing to keep person upright against the force of gravity. Quadriceps comes out and over the patella where the stimulus is applied. Gives a sharp quick stretch of quadriceps muscle spindles which results in contraction of quadriceps muscle. Say contraction in extensor muscle and relaxation at flexor muscle. Do not say excited extensor/inhibited flexor because excitation/inhibition is occurring in the. Someone with severed spinal cord will have a larger spinal reflex. In a healthy person, there is barely to almost no muscle tone ie: passive resistance. Whatever muscle tone is present is due to the mechanical properties of the muscles themselves ie: the visco-elastic properties.
