Lecture 14 - populism and the parties of the extreme. A half party in the middle can actually capture additional votes, as they can act as a coalition party for another party. Relation of the half party in uences voter behaviour, as well as party behaviour: three or more parties. Three or more parties getting >20% of the vote on a regular basis. There is very little incentive for parties to move towards the center, as no one party is going to win the election. Therefore, they can stick with their niche and form a coalition with another party. ^ need to determine whether the parties work in a consensual way, or are polarized. If they"re polarized, parties are deeply divided and not open to coalition, and vice versa. Parties don"t just represent constituencies (parties are social coalitions trying to stitch together social groups) They also respond to the competitive cues form the party system.
