Political Science 1020E Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Distributive Justice, Ebola Virus Disease, Natural Disaster
Document Summary
The world in 2016: decline of ebola, guinea worm, polio, malaria, cancer, war deaths, poverty, terrorism (paris, san bernadino, afghanistan, tampa, iraq, syria) - terrorists deaths going down, continuing challenges: climate change, global poverty, war, refugees. What is a refugee? a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. 21 million refugees, half under age of 18 (turkey housing most refugees) Syria & denmark: syrian war started about 5 yrs ago, massive civil war, over 400,000 killed. Vs: denmark: well-governed, peaceful, happy, excellent health and education. Politics makes the difference: it is not intelligence, propensity to violence, or even geography that explains the differences between denmark and syria. It is the state, the rule of law, and accountable government: politics is about collective choices we make to reduce conflict and promote cooperation.
