Anarchism - basically no state, an + archos = without rulers. The claim is that we would be better off without the government. Cooperation is beneficial, so it tends to evolve. Hobbe"s reply to anarchism - fear, suspicion and competition will overwhelm cooperation. Two more anarchist responses: humans are naturally good, social cooperation without coercion is possible. Options: either conflict or the state - if the state doesn"t enforce people to cooperate, then no one will cooperate. The state has coercive power, it can restrain people. Negative argument: the state is only alternative to the state of nature. People are naturally free, equal and independent. Legitimate power is created by us (someone has the power over someone else, but if there is a legitimate reason then it becomes authority.
