Domination + legitimacy = authority: made up of power + legitimacy. Three ways to legitimate domination: traditional - it"s always been that way. Aligns itself with the long standing practices of legitimacy: charismatic - forces of personality, especially in time of crisis. Has its greatest impact in the time of crisis. Legal-rational - the appeal of reasonable and general rules. Willing to follow rules because they have been created in open processes and are general and apply to everyone equally. Democracy also legitimates: popular consent and participation. Agreed at some point through some process that the people in power have a right to exercise that power. Actively participate and offer consent to those people. Ensure that the government understand what they are doing wrong and where they wish the government to improve and alter the course that should be taken. Leaders try to take traditions and alter them.
