The domestic role of the military: military. Military may offer itself as alternative to civilian rule. Can deter or suppress rebellion + revolution. Liberal: sustains rule of law impartially, consensually. Conservative: props up state authority in face of constant threat of disorder (pessimistic view of human nature) Radical: serves elites, represses people, requires constant check and challenge: broken window theory. Police force should pay attention to the little things: ferguson, missouri"s subversion of it. Overwhelming white police force providing security for a large black population.
