Power is the ability to coerce somebody to do something they might otherwise not do. People consent to being governed through the social contract and through elections. Traditional: based on long-standing customs and values. Charismatic: personal traits of leader; highly motivating and convincing. Characteristics are what brought them into power (popular) Places authority in hands of the people, rejects elitism. Legal-rational: based on status of office holder relative to constitutional rules. Brought into power by legal laws that select the leaders. No just elections but a social contract that exists between the governed and the governing. Developed by stephen lukes: direct action on a person. I make do something you wouldn t otherwise do: non decision-making. Purposefully omitting something from the agenda: determining the very things people think are in their interests.
