Document Summary

Hobbes and locke both lived through the english civil war and were attempting to rationalize it. Wide range of political influence (international, democracy, etc) Had the tabula rasa idea we start off as blank slates. Law of nature all should be preserved as much as may be. You can pursue your own self interests, but you should aim to do no harm for others (rather than harming others) Do no harm to them and they will most likely not harm you. Not in vain so need enforcer. Some lack power to enforce the law of nature. Children, people who are too small or not smart enough, not in authority position. Pity or compassion for the suffering of others. Hobbes and locke describe the civilized man. The natural savage pre civilized man who is unaware of morality, simply exist, seek to exist. At one point, self preservation will override your instinct to help someone else.
