Does the liberty principle really maximize utility? i. e. couldn"t we produce more happiness by intervening for a person"s own good? (paternalism: drug intervention, etc. But mills says it is never justifiable if someone is not harming others. The permanent interests of a man as a progressive being: the idea is crucial for understanding mill"s utilitarian liberal position, human beings are capable of progress: they can benefit from experience. Experiments in living" are examples to be followed: people living in different ways, experimental lifestyle -> observe and learn from it. Liberals see individuals as isolated atoms: communitarians disagree and say people are fundamentally social, community defines identity.
