Human reason requires god"s help to discover the truth and promote human welfare. Catholic religion is the only religion of the state. Rejection of the central liberal claims and secularism. Simple, rural, communal life and natural hierarchy. Commerce and capitalism destroy culture and spirituality. Worried about commercial activity and reject pursuit of profit and material wealth. Attract support from aristocratic landowners and working class. Address working class needs: improve working conditions; support right to organize and strike. Encourage working class to support monarchy and church. First strand: cultural conservatives reject rationalist pursuit of perfection and harmful effects of capitalism. Second strand: economic conservatives defend liberal society and laissez- faire capitalism. Conservative distrust of democracy because it leads to chaos and dictatorship. We should entrust government to an elite. Economic conservatives (fiscal policy, least amount of regulations, economic stability) Social (mainly religious) conservatives (us christian groups, role of scared texts, religion in politics and our social lives)
