Political Science 1020E Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ronald Dworkin, Rationality, Fee Tail
Document Summary
Poli sci lecture 6 oct. 1 2015. Swift considers five answers to this question: taxation need not reduce the freedom of those who are taxed. Ronald dworkin: taxes restrict my freedom only if i have a right to my money in the first place. But no one has a right to a specific amount of money. The interference that restricts my freedom is only when its unjustified. I"m only made less free if i don"t have a right to the money. Cohen: taxes always restrict my freedom because they limit my choices. Taxes limit to what i want to buy because i have less than what i started with and nothing is free. Redistributive taxation reduces the freedom of the rich but increases the freedom of the poor: redistribution can help people, regardless of its effects on freedom. Taxes can be used to provide public goods to improve prospects for the worst off.
